What is ArtLab?
PlatteForum's ArtLab is a high-impact, arts-based youth development internship program for high-school youth that incorporates the arts with academic, personal, and professional skill development. We use the creative process and the arts as a vehicle to support successful transition to adulthood.
ArtLab interns are paid a stipend during the academic year $150/semester and minimum wage during the summer. Students work for 3 hours on Saturdays during the school year and attend PlatteForum opening events and 20 hours a week for 8 weeks in the summer time.
ArtLab youth work side by side with professional artists to create 3-5 bodies of work annually which are professionally presented to the public. With the opportunity to work with a variety of artists, students are exposed to diverse genres such as sculpture, painting, filmmaking, street art, choreography, music, photography, poetry and more. Youth create and present major artistic works relating to issues in their lives and communities, participate in service-learning projects, and mentor younger children during Learning Lab workshops. Families of youth are involved in key aspects of the program. Students are also provided personalized planning support to reach their goals after high school. Students also participate in a college mentoring program that provides each student mentors to help them transition from high school to college.
Who can apply?
Any student can apply who is between the ages of 15 – 19 years old, currently in school and has at least 1.5 years of school remaining before their anticipated graduation. Most students with freshman, sophomore or junior standing will qualify. Students are accepted based on their need for the program in their lives and ability to commit to the year round program. Once selected, students remain in ArtLab until the summer after they graduate high school.
What is the application process?
Students submit an application to PlatteForum by the deadline. Applications are reviewed by staff who select a group of students who will participate in an individual interview. Students are interviewed by a group of PlatteForum staff, current ArtLab studentsInterns, and PlatteForum committee members.
